Mary Lee (Ludwig) Hafer

April 3, 1930 — February 4, 2025

Wellsboro

Mary Lee (Ludwig) Hafer, age 94, of Wellsboro, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Broad Acres Nursing & Rehab. Center in Wellsboro. She was married to the late Barry O. Hafer, Sr., sharing 60 years of marriage, prior to his passing in 2009. Born April 2, 1930, in Hepburn Township, PA, she was a daughter of the late Harris & Frances (Hakes) Ludwig.

Mary Lee was a hardworking, fun-loving, talented and faithful woman, whose door was always open for compassion and hospitality. She had a knack for making everyone feel welcome as a premier host, truly happiest while entertaining and cooking for her family and friends. Mary Lee worked alongside her husband, Barry, in growing and operating their dairy farm and insurance agency. She played piano and sang beautifully, often playing for the Mainesburg United Methodist Church, where she regularly attended services. She also enjoyed attending live concerts, breeding Keeshond dogs, playing cards and a wide variety of board games with friends and family.

The only thing Mary Lee cherished more than her comfortable lake life, on the property developed by her husband and sons, was the time spent with her children and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons and daughters-in-law, Donald & Pamela Hafer, of Sayre, PA, and Barry, Jr. & JoAnn Hafer, of Port Matilda, PA; daughter, Cindy Bastian, of Mansfield, PA; son-in-law, Harold Courtney, of Mansfield. PA; ten grandchildren & twenty great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Kies, of Cogan Station, PA, and Carol Taylor, of Coraopolis, PA; several nieces & nephews, and many dear friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Barry, Sr., Mary Lee was preceded in death by her daughter, Sherry Courtney; son-in-law, Glenn Bastian, Jr.; brother, Donald Ludwig; and sisters, June Zimmerman & Jean Moore.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Mary Lee’s name to either the Mainesburg United Methodist Church, 100 Smith Park Rd, Mainesburg, PA 16932, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
